Clarion Housing Group strengthens Mayor of London partnership with 5,000 home strategic deal

Clarion Housing Group is entering a strategic partnership with the Mayor of London to deliver at least 5,000 high quality, new affordable homes in the capital by 2021.

The new partnership will see Clarion, the UK’s largest housing association, use its experience in funding and delivering new homes to work closely with the Mayor to achieve this shared housing target. City Hall is providing £168m of grant funding to support the programme.

The strategic partnership strengthens Clarion’s existing relationship with the Mayor, one of the Group’s most important partners.  It also represents another milestone in Clarion’s plans to deliver 50,000 high quality new homes of all tenures across England over 10 years - in turn transforming neighbourhoods and investing in communities.

Clarion’s New Business and Partnerships Director, Kerry O’Driscoll, stated:

“This partnership is good news for the many thousands of Londoners who desperately need affordable housing in the capital and for Clarion Housing Group.  We are already investing significantly in the capital and the partnership support of the Mayor will enable us to deliver more new affordable homes for London.

“It also demonstrates the importance to Clarion of genuine partnership working with the public and private sectors and we look forward to working closely with City Hall and all our stakeholders in London to accelerate the delivery of these much needed new homes.”

Welcoming the strategic partnership with Clarion Housing Group the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said:

“I want to see everyone playing their part in tackling the housing crisis in London, because it is simply unacceptable that Londoners continue to be priced out of a city they call home.

“We know that solving the housing crisis is not going to happen overnight, but I very much welcome so many housing associations and councils matching my ambition by committing to build the new and genuinely affordable homes Londoners so desperately need.

“I am delighted that we have set a City Hall record for the number of homes allocated funding - but I am clear that we have got much more to do to secure the land we need to build homes and ensure we have sufficient capacity in the construction industry.”

As part of the partnership arrangement with the Mayor, Clarion has pledged to deliver 30% of the new homes at genuinely affordable rents, along with 70% for shared ownership, giving Londoners the opportunity to buy their own home. These new homes will supplement the housing that Clarion is already planning to build in the capital over the next four years for market sale, market rent and affordable tenures.
