National Apprenticeship Week 2016

This year we have supported our 400th apprentice.

Having been one of the first housing associations to convert existing roles into apprenticeships, we have also been the first housing association to set up an Employer Engagement team and we have forged links with employers such as the Royal Household and Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant to provide fantastic opportunities for our residents.

The theme of National Apprenticeship Week 2016 - apprenticeships can take you anywhere - provides the perfect opportunity for us to showcase the progression that our apprentices have achieved and how they have gained the skills and experience required, on the job, for their roles - which would have otherwise needed a relevant qualification.


Nicole - Contract Surveyor

Ready 2work 020Nicole started at Affinity Sutton as an Apprentice Contracts Administrator. Five months into her apprenticeship she was awarded as Apprentice of the Year at Affinity Sutton’s annual apprenticeship celebration event.

Nicole became an apprentice because she wanted a career change. It helped her to quickly gain an in-depth understanding of the housing sector and gave her a foot in the door. Nicole was quickly noticed by managers for her hard work and rapidly increasing knowledge.

“I wish had undertaken an apprenticeship as soon as I left school rather than five years later. I’m glad I’ve done it now though.”

Sam - Property Services Administrator

Sam Apprentice

Sam started at Affinity Sutton as an Apprentice Support Assistant, working with housing management and community investment. Sam had wanted to start a career in business but was attracted to the housing sector because of its strong sense of social purpose. Once on his apprenticeship Sam was able to meet with a diverse range of residents with differing circumstances. He was inspired to work hard because he knew that he could contribute to making a positive impact on their lives.

Sam successfully applied for a role in property services and was able to use his experience of working closely with residents to demonstrate a good understanding of the role.

Zoltan - Accounts Payable Administrator

NAW Zoltan

Zoltan, a father of five, sought the support of the Ready2Work after unfortunately losing his job. Zoltan embraced the opportunity as a fresh start and decided to change careers. Zoltan got on well with the Ready2Work officers and always thought it would be a great place to work, so when an apprentice compliance coordinator vacancy came up within the organisation, he didn’t hesitate in applying.

While on his apprenticeship Zoltan gained an NVQ and before his apprenticeship was up he was offered a temporary administrator job, which then transferred to a permanent contract. Zoltan has since moved to the Accounts Payable department and has been awarded a grant by Affinity Sutton enrol on to an ACCA accounting course to gain the foundation diploma.
