This Week (7th March) Clarion Housing Group hosted an industry event at Oval Cricket Ground to raise awareness of apprenticeships and their valuable contribution to business. The event was part of Clarion led Love London Working – a ground breaking partnership between 15 housing associations which will help 21,000 London residents develop work and life skills.
Over 100 delegates attended the day, which coincided with the 10th anniversary of National Apprenticeship Week, representing the housing sector and other leading organisations including Aspire Housing, Kier, CBS, Reed and Child Poverty Action Group. They were joined by a group of aspiring apprentices.
At the event Clarion Housing Group congratulated its 500th apprentice Martha Bonner who is a customer services apprentice with MyTime leisure advisor, and Kirsty Bower Head of Procurement at Clarion Housing Group, introduced the department’s fifth apprentice Sophie Walker, now a full time Procurement Officer.
Partners submitted some ambitious pledges on the visual pledge wall, which included taking on up to five apprentices a year, offering a current employee a 'higher apprenticeship' and supporting employers with apprenticeship strategies.
Workshops were held on engaging with schools and using social value creatively. Innovative solutions were suggested including a ‘foundation apprenticeship’, where someone can try a range of departments and an ‘apprenticeship job share’, for employers who can’t afford to take on a full time apprentice.
The event concluded with twelve companies interviewing thirty-three candidates for employment opportunities. In total eight successful candidates were offered apprenticeships in Business Administration, Childcare, e-learning, Plumbing and Carpentry.
Phil Miles, Director of Community Investment at Clarion Housing Group said: ‘This is a key moment for Apprenticeships with the new Apprenticeship Levy and greater government support and recognition. It was great to have so many employer partners joining us at the event and with their continued help we are aiming to celebrate our 1000th Apprenticeship in two years time.’
