UK’s biggest housing association to invest £1 billion in Merton

Clarion Housing Group has submitted ambitious proposals to transform three existing estates in the London Borough of Merton.  These proposals will see Clarion invest £1 billion in the borough, deliver 2,800 new homes there and rehouse all existing tenants and resident homeowners who wish to remain.

The outline planning application follows extensive consultation with residents and will breathe new life into the  communities at Eastfields, High Path and Ravensbury.  In addition to the 1,000 new  homes to rehouse existing residents, an extra 1,800 homes to rent and buy will be built, contributing to Clarion’s target of building 50,000 homes over the next ten years.

Director of Regeneration, Bob Beaumont commented; “As the country’s largest housing association, Clarion possesses the capacity and expertise to deliver large scale estate regeneration projects such as this.  As well as providing good quality new homes our plans will provide extensive opportunities for training and employment and a range of initiatives to improve the life chances of young people in Merton.”

The decision to pursue regeneration of the three neighbourhoods was made after taking into account the standard of existing homes, levels of overcrowding and the findings of an independent residents’ survey.

Permission has already been granted for 21 homes on the garages site at Ravensbury and for 134 on land not currently used for housing at High Path. Construction of the first new homes on the disused site at Ravensbury is due to begin early next year. Subject to planning approval for each of the neighbourhoods in their entirety, the demolition of existing homes in the initial phases is scheduled to start in late 2017.

Clarion is a major housing provider in Merton and expects to extend its new building activities in the borough in partnership with the Council.
