Surviving a pandemic
The health and safety of our people and residents are our top priority. The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic saw us tested as never before.
We switched our working practices and systems to being digital-first. Covid-secure working environments were created, as well as protocols to safeguard colleagues and residents. This enabled many services to be delivered remotely during periods of lockdown.
Throughout the pandemic we have been guided by government advice in providing Covid-secure working environments and developing new protocols aimed at protecting our colleagues and residents.
Covid-19 support in 2020-21
80,000+
calls to check on vulnerable and elderly residents
20,000
households offered help with rent
£726,000
funding for community groups, food banks, and charities, through our Covid-19 response grant programme
The new normal
Our people had the tools they needed to work from home. Those who struggled with working at home were able to work in a Covid-secure office.
During lockdown we ensured that our people could work from home by providing IT equipment and workstation furniture.
We also ensured that those who struggled with working at home could work at a Covid-secure office.
And strict Covid protocols enabled colleagues to continue to work at our LiveSmart schemes for older residents or provide essential services on our estates.
Wellbeing support was given to colleagues and we provided guidance on managing anxiety and stress.
We continually updated information in line with government guidance. This ensured that staff could access reputable sources of information.
“I tried to check in on the older residents as much as I could, checking they were OK by speaking to them through their windows…The pandemic has shown just how important our job, being out and about on the estates all day, really is.”
Going the extra mile
The dedication of our colleagues helped us to deliver for our residents even during periods of lockdown.
Covid-19-safe working allowed us to:
- keep estates clean and secure
- carry out fire risk assessments
- conduct gas and electrical safety inspections
- make urgent repairs.

Impact of the pandemic
We’ve conducted in-depth research into the impact of the pandemic on our residents. This has provided data to help shape the services we provide.
For instance, the research revealed concerning levels of loneliness among residents. We launched our Lend an Ear befriending service, matching residents with volunteers, and our #meinmind service gives residents free access to an online support platform.
