Green light for new family homes in Merton

Local authority approves Clarion Housing Group’s plans for next phase of Ravensbury regeneration project.

Clarion Housing Group has been given the green light to build 179 new homes in the London Borough of Merton.

The UK’s largest affordable housing provider was last week (14 November) granted approval by the local authority to move forward with its plans for the next phases of its regeneration project at Ravensbury, Mitcham.

Under the plans, more than half of the homes (56 per cent) will be affordable. Of the affordable homes, over 80 per cent will be for social rent.

The homes are a mix of one- and two-bedroom flats and two-, three-and four-bedroom houses. The project also includes a new community centre.

The scheme forms part of Clarion’s wider regeneration project in Merton, which will deliver 2,800 new homes and 9,000 sqm of commercial and retail space across three neighbourhoods.

Building work is well underway on the first 21 new homes at Ravensbury and 134 homes at High Path, south Wimbledon.

“Around three-quarters of the new homes will be much-needed family housing, benefitting today’s residents and future generations.”

Paul Quinn, director of the Merton regeneration project for Clarion

Paul Quinn, director of the Merton regeneration project for Clarion, said:

“This scheme will improve the lives of residents in Ravensbury and will see the outdated and overcrowded accommodation replaced with well-designed, modern housing."

“It is particularly pleasing that around three-quarters of the new homes will be much-needed family housing, benefitting today’s residents and future generations.”

Paul Maddock, Senior Associate for HTA Design LLP, the architects on the project, said:

“We are delighted that following many years of in-depth engagement with residents, planning consent at Ravensbury has been achieved."

“The project enhances this unique riverside setting and delivers new affordable housing while embracing circular economy principles.”
