Majestic Way site in Merton acquired by Clarion Housing Group for redevelopment

The new site is earmarked for the provision of new affordable housing along with improved and diversified commercial spaces.

Clarion Housing Group, the UK's largest housing association, has completed the purchase of the Majestic Way site in Merton as part of its ongoing commitment to the redevelopment and provision of affordable housing for the local area.

Aligned with the shared vision of Merton Council and Clarion, the Majestic Way site, which includes the multi-story car park, is earmarked for the provision of new affordable housing along with improved and diversified commercial spaces.

This strategic acquisition represents another major step in Clarion’s ambitions for the regeneration of Merton, with a focus on community-driven redevelopment of the much-loved high street and sustainable urban growth.

Clarion is excited to embark on this journey and is dedicated to working with the Council to ensure key sections of the site remains available for use while moving forward with the planning process. Current commercial units will remain available for use until plans have been formalised, while the car park will be permanently closed from the 30th July.

Clarion looks forward to engaging extensively with local stakeholders, including local community groups, local councillors, local schools and businesses, to ensure the redevelopment reflects the aspirations and needs of the area.

Richard Cook, Group Development Director at Clarion Housing Group, said:

"Our acquisition of the Majestic Way site is a testament to our dedication to Merton and its residents. Working together with the Council, we are poised to deliver a project that respects the area's heritage while paving the way for its bright future.”

“We are committed to delivering sustainable and affordable housing, creating spaces that bring people together and enhance the quality of life for everyone in the community."

Councillor Ross Garrod, Leader of Merton Council, said:

“This milestone is a very welcome step forward for Mitcham town centre. It’s the area I grew up in, and I want to see Mitcham thrive for the community, with more homes and better buildings for commercial spaces that are fit for the future.

“I recognise Clarion Housing Group’s commitment to the investment and improvement plans for Mitcham. Vibrant town centres are at the heart of communities, and we look forward to working with Clarion to create a place that makes residents and businesses proud.

“While longer term plans are being developed, I am pleased that Clarion is exploring how to put empty shops to use in the short term and restore activity to this part of the town centre.”
